Staff in the pensions industry have encountered a rise in racist abuse as violent riots erupted in parts of the UK, following a mass stabbing of young children in Southport. The anti-immigration protests, which started at the end of July, have led to mosques being targeted, bus passengers being assaulted, and a hotel housing asylum seekers being set ablaze.

Charlotte O’Leary, CEO of Pensions for Purpose, said there are measures employees can take. She encouraged staff to share intelligence if they know of any protests planned near their work or transport hubs, so steps can be taken to uphold safety.

She added: “Our employees are assured their safety and well-being are our top priorities and we are here to support them. For the wider industry, I urge all companies to take a stand against racism and discrimination and to actively support their staff.

“By working together, we can overcome this period of unrest and emerge stronger as a community.”
