Biodiversity & Natural Capital

Introduction

There is an ever-greater focus on environmental and social challenges and this is only expected to grow. In response, we increasingly find asset owners asking us if they should embed environmental, social and governance (ESG) and impact investment opportunities in their investment strategy, and how to go about it.

Having led many training sessions with trustees and pension committees to address crucial ESG and impact investment themes, we want to provide details on how we could help tailor training to asset owners, particularly pension funds.

Course content

As asset owners are on different stages of their responsible investment journey, we develop and customise our courses to your requirements. In our experience, the content normally covers many of these areas:

  • The ‘what is’ and ‘why’ of impact investing.
  • How ESG and impact investment relate to fiduciary duty.
  • Where ESG and impact fit within the spectrum of capital.
  • How to develop an impact framework according to / in line with the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
  • How to align, measure and disclose performance on impact objectives.
  • Ways to develop investment beliefs to embed impact into an investment strategy.
  • The role of engagement and divestment.
  • How to consider natural capital and climate change from an investment strategy perspective.
  • The relationship between universal ownership and investment strategy.
  • How to approach the theory of change and systems thinking.
  • What new UK and EU fund disclosures and regulations mean practically for impact investing.
  • How to measure and aggregate real-world impact.

This session will normally take the form of a workshop which will cover:

  • An introduction to the spectrum of capital from responsible investing through to impact investing, with examples.
  • Introduction to the United Nations sustainable development goals (SDGs), and how to consider these for a pension fund.
  • Your trustee / committee members’ personal views as to which SDGs represent the biggest risks or return opportunities for the pension fund (via our voting software).
  • A discussion around the investment theses underpinning these personal views, i.e. how the investment portfolio will be financially affected by any threats or opportunities relating to each SDG being discussed.
  • A second opportunity to vote following the discussion above, with the aim of reaching a consensus view on the top three to five goals for the pension fund, underpinned by agreed investment theses.
  • A discussion about how best to align to these goals over the next two to three years, referring to the spectrum of capital.

Participants will need to prepare in advance for this workshop and we will send an explanation of what is required, in advance.

The aim

To achieve a broad consensus around the priorities for the pension fund in terms of ESG beliefs, and strategically how to become more closely aligned. The output from this workshop can be used to frame an investment approach for the fund, and to agree amended investment governance wording, for example for the Investment Strategy Statement or Statement of Investment Principles.

Introduction

Many asset owners are ready to commence, or have already started, their impact investment journey. Consequently, the skills and knowledge requirements of pension committees, trustees and investment teams need to evolve in terms of how to best implement and monitor new portfolios and investment mandates.

Course content

We develop and customise course content to the exact requirements of the asset owner. In our experience, the course normally covers most of these areas:

  • Embedding a strong theory of change within the impact investment strategy that is outcomes and impact focused.
  • Understanding the tools available to help asset owners identify, measure, make decisions and report on their impact.
  • Embedding impact investment philosophy within the governance framework of the fund, including updates to the Investment Strategy Statement or Statement of Investment Principles.
  • Sourcing, due diligence and decision-making processes in selecting new impact investment mandates.
  • Understanding how impact can be achieved across different asset classes, and public and private markets.
  • Understanding the various frameworks and standards available to measure impact management and how they complement each other.
  • Reviewing the different options for measuring impact, and the role of validation and assurance.
  • Measuring investor contribution and what makes effective stewardship.

Introduction

Biodiversity & natural capital has been an area of interest for asset owners, with some of our best-attended events focused on this topic. In January 2025, Pensions for Purpose published ‘Integrating nature & biodiversity into investment – an asset owner perspective’ research, which examines how asset owners are integrating nature-related considerations into their sustainability priorities, the frameworks they use and the challenges they face in data collection.

Course content

We develop and customise course content to the exact requirements of the asset owner. In our experience, the course covers:

  • An introduction to the investment universe, covering natural capital.
  • The goals and targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
  • The reporting requirements of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures.
  • An introduction to the tools available to assess impacts, dependencies, risks and opportunities arising from nature and biodiversity.
  • Overview of the UK and EU regulatory framework covering biodiversity.
